Our 9ijakids Story

Our 9ijakids Story

Spread the love

My name is Titi Adewusi, I am one of the Co-Founders of 9ijakids – an Edtech Company that develops fun games for children.

I am a mother of 2 boys – aged 9 and 11.

My younger son is what you will call a digital native. He seems to have an innate ability to decode everything digital. From the age of 2 years old, I noticed that even before he could read, he could navigate through any phone to get to where games are. And if you allow him, he would have purchased games worth hundreds of dollars online before you blink.

So, I thought I had given birth to a genius. But when he started school, it was a different story. We started a running battle with him and the phone/ipad. When it comes to schoolwork – I am tired, I am sleepy, I want to drink water, I am hungry, etc. But when on the iPad or phone. – it’s another story. Does this sound familiar?

We had this running battle of seizing the iPad or phone until I came across a quote.

“If a child doesn’t learn the way you teach him, then teach him the way he learns”

Did you know that we forget 50% of anything we learn within the first 1hr? Research shows that most people including children forget 70% of what they learn within 24 hours. Research also shows that the best way to remember anything years after it has been taught is through– songs, hands on activity, visuals, stories, games and technology.

I still remember how many rivers there in Africa. I don’t know if you know how many. No, I am not a genius, I just remember the song. Same with the bible verses I know. The ones with songs stick longer. Games and technology have the same effect.

When I was a child, I thought Monopoly was just a FUN game that we loved. What I didn’t realize was that through it, I had effortlessly learnt about the streets of London even though no one sat down and taught me, and I had never visited before.

This is the POWER of gaming.

So, using what my son learns best with (and most digital natives these days), 9ijakids develop games that can be played on the tablet, phone or computer. So, we are using hands on, games, technology – 3 of the 5 top ways to help people remember what they are learning. Games that are fun and cut across various topics in Maths, English, Science. But not only academics but also Values like Honesty, Bullying, Courage and Courtesy. Because we believe education is about the total child – we also have games on our Nigerian heritage, Financial Literacy/Entrepreneurship and the Bible.
