“I’ve worked in education my whole adult life and still struggle with being the person in charge of my child’s learning experience,” said Bukola, teacher and mother of two boys.

The first thing we as parents and educators need to do is set realistic expectations with our children, their teachers, and ourselves. We can’t recreate all the benefits of the face-to-face classroom, but we can give our children more freedom to explore while learning.”

Learning online is different from the classroom. It is a bit more challenging for students to engage with you, the content, and each other. Plus, they have something new to engage with – the technology.

These 5 strategies can help you keep them motivated and on track for success:

1. Build a sense of community: One challenge of online learning is that students often feel quite isolated. Consider how you can make direct contact, through emails, instant message, and video, to as many learners as possible, helping them see how you are invested in their learning.

2. Encourage open and sincere communication: Encourage your student to express their opinion about how they learn best. Create an open atmosphere where they feel comfortable expressing their likes, dislikes, or concerns. Then ensure to validate their feelings.

3. Introduce and encourage different learning styles: Every student has learning preferences and styles that are best suited to their way of learning. Fundamental learning styles such as – Visual, Auditory, Verbal, Physical, Logical (mathematical), Social and Solitary. E.g. students who are visual learners learn best by seeing how things work. Students who are auditory learners learn best by listening to things being explained. For young children, it is beneficial to explore and employ different types of learning styles.

4. Make every day a learning day: Turning every day into a learning day may sound like a bit much, but it really isn’t, if you go about it the right way. Whenever possible, encourage your students to explore the world around them, ask questions and make connections. Turning every day into a learning day will help every child develop the internal motivation to learn.

5. Make learning fun through game-based learning: Using games as an education tool not only provides opportunities for deeper learning and development of non-cognitive skills, it helps motivate students learn their best way. When student is actively engaged with a game, their mind experiences the pleasure of learning a new system.

When you make a concerted effort to engage students in their learning, they’ll be better able to maintain focus, sustain positive behaviour, and grasp to retain the material you’re working so hard to deliver–a positive outcome for everybody!!!
